“Love never fails.”
Oh snap, but I do. So you won’t catch me reading 1
Corinthians 13 at my wedding—I can’t decide if I’d keel over from mortification
or flee in panic. Great. Thanks for
reading that in front of EVERYONE and asking me to live up to it. I feel
amazing. Actually, I quit. No really. You can all go home now…
Let’s just admit it: I know I can’t and I won’t ever do love
“right” according to this passage. I’m not always patient. Not always kind. And
let’s not even talk about pride or anger or all the rest of it…
You know what makes me feel better? None of us human beings
does it right.
You know what makes me feel worse? None of us human beings
does it right.
We see love reflected dimly, played out by messed-up people
in a messed-up world. And often, it ain’t pretty.
But my failure to love perfectly doesn’t mean Love itself
has failed.
I’m a funhouse mirror. Sometimes if the angle is just right,
you can catch a glimpse of the true reflection. Usually, though, it’s stretched
out or wobbly or just plain silly. Sometimes it’s grotesque. But I’m a
wacked-out, wiggly mirror. Please don’t judge the Original by me.
Because one bright day, that messed-up mirror you hold in
front of your face will be cast down, and all dim reflections around you will pale
compared to the real face of Love in all his glory.
Love who is patient, Love who is kind. Love who keeps no
record of wrongs. Love who never fails.
And in the knowledge that that Face exists, soldier on,
little funhouse mirror. Do your best. His face is worth the reflecting.
“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror, then we
shall see face to face...”
